Well done to everyone who has taken part in the club championships over the last week. No doubt the fine weather helped towards some
good performances at the NSC on Sunday. This year saw the introduction of some new races. They included a couple of wheelchair events
and also a number of hurdling events. It was in the latter, over 70 metres, that Amber Sibbald produced possibly the performance of the day,
wasting no time in adding another island record to her growing collection with a time of 12.6 seconds.
Meanwhile club athlete Rachael Tewkesbury was competing off-island in Liverpool in the Penny Lane Striders 10K. It was another 1st place for Rachael finishing in a time of 38 minutes 51 seconds.
Results from week 7 of the 2012 track league are now available here.

The second of this year's Isle of Man Open Track and Field meetings took place at the NSC on Monday night (11th June) in very good conditions.
It was well attended by Northern athletes and there were some good performances but two stood out from the rest and both were in the High Jump competitions.
In the Under 13 girls Amber Sibbald broke the Manx record for her age category with an excellent clearance of 1m 51cm. This was 3cm higher than the previous record which has been held by Reagan Dee since 2007. This puts Amber right up there with the best in her age group in the UK in 4th position so far this season.
Not to be outdone, Neil Vondy broke his own Manx record for the V45 category of 1m 60cm set at last year's club championships adding an extra 6 centimetres to take it up to 1m 66cm.
Weeks 5 and 6 of the Track League are now uploaded and previous weeks have been updated. You can see them all by following the links below.
A reminder that week 7 gets under way on June 13th for ages U13 and older after the TT break.
Last month's Up & Running Northern 10 road race saw the 30th running of the event, which first took place back in 1983 and was won by our current club chairman Steve Kelly.
His time on that day of 52 minutes 42 seconds still stands as the fastest time attained on the course.
There is now a complete list of results for every race held over the 30 years which can be found here. Thanks go to Murray Lambden who has researched the results that were previously missing and made them available for inclusion on the site.
After week 2 had to be called off due to the weather, weeks 3 and 4 of the Track League went ahead without a hitch.
Results from week 3 (U13 and over) can be found here and
week 4 (U7, U9 and U11) can be found here.

Northern Athletic Club took a small team of 12 athletes to the two day Lancashire County track and field championships in Blackpool last Saturday
and Sunday. For most of the predominantly young squad, this was their first exposure to "off island" competition. The 12 took part in a total of
44 events and brought home an exceptional haul of 10 medals - 5 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze together with 15 personal bests of which 8 achieved
"AAA standard" grading despite the less than ideal windy conditions.
Amber Sibbald and James Strickett got the weekend off to a great start by winning gold in their respective sprint hurdle races. James had to battle the whole way to take it on the line by two tenths of a second, while the tall and stylish Amber romped home in a championship record of 12.4 which gets her a UK ranking place. Amber became the star of the weekend by adding a further two gold in the long jump and high jump with all three events gaining "AAA standard" grading. The hurdles did take their toll with a heavy fall by Abbie Melvin in the final of the 70m hurdles after recording a 13.4 in the heat, which would have placed her in bronze. Also taking a tumble was Alicia Oatts, both girls required attention for some quite nasty burns, but both insisted on getting back into the action.
In the U13 boys discus, George Melvin threw a solid 13.40m to take silver ahead of team mate James Strickett in bronze, but was quite disappointed as the winning distance was well within distances he has been regularly achieving this year.
Not to be outshone by the youngsters, seasoned senior athletes, Ryan Fairclough and Peter Richardson secured solid silvers in the 800m and long jump.
Voirrey Baker improved as the weekend unfolded competing in all the possible throws, culminating in her favourite, the shot and her first putt of 8.06m proved her best giving her fourth and an AAA standard.
Unfortunately the team had to leave for the boat back to the island before being able to see 11 year old all rounder Jess Hill in her last two events. Earlier in the heats of the 800m, she set a pb of 2.40.7 and went into the final third fastest, but after a punishing two days the final was a slower, more tactical race with Jess coming home with a creditable fifth. The final field event of the day saw her comfortably secured NAC's fifth gold in the shot putt to add to her Javelin bronze and fifth in the 1500m.
Jess Swales, Ryan Kinrade, Bethan Walmsley and Alicia Oatts also enjoyed personal bests and good first trip experience which will act as invaluable groundwork for their next trip away.
Sincere thanks must go to Ramsey Rotary who kindly funded part of the travel costs for these young athletes and made the trip possible and hopefully now an annual event for the club.

Last Sunday (May 6th) Manx Harriers hosted the Isle Of Man 20K Walking Championships at Ronaldsway Industrial Estate. Taking part was Michelle Turner who has been clocked up several race walking wins over the last year. She was again first lady here but even more impressive was the time - 1 hour 54 minutes 41 seconds - the fastest time in the UK/IOM this year by almost 3 minutes.
A field of 3000 runners took part in the Belfast Marathon held on Bank Holiday Monday. Amongst them was Northern's Kevin Vondy
running his first marathon in over 18 months. He was very pleased with his time of 3 hours 3 minutes and 28 seconds which he achieved
despite the cold, wind and rain that the race took place in. The time earned him 99th overall and 5th in the M50 category.

Results from the first track league meeting of 2012 (U13 and over) can be found here.
The first round of the new season got underway with 101 athletes heading round the idyllic park setting in bright but blustery conditions.
First away were the under 9 and 11 age groups and after just 4 mins 38 secs Deacon Lombard-Chibnall U11B, headed the pack home. Mariella Craig U11G, Alex Read U9B and Ella Crowe U9G comfortably won their classes to make it a NAC clean sweep.
Next away was the only mass start of the series with everyone for the one and three lap races. Kevin Loundes stepped down to the shorter distance for a speed session, headed the field for the entire race and was rewarded with a course record of 8.51, a clear minute ahead of Stephen Garrett and Mark Turner in third - both course records now stand in Kevin's name. A great debut into the senior ranks for 11 year old, Jess Hill who came 6th on the road and first lady home. She is phenomenally talented all rounder and perhaps a potential Jess Ennis of the future? Less than one year after his major transplant, Brian Masterson was back in his training shoes and racing - good to see you back.
Oliver Lockley dominated the three lap but the conditions and being out on his own, kept his winning time at a "modest" 21.22 Rachel Tewkesbury showed good early season form coming 12th in 24.27.
The Olympics has forced changes to the island's fixtures and the next Park Race is Tuesday 1st May when the handicap system kicks in.

It details the many benefits of being a member many of which are extrinsic and very tangible. It would also enable you to be paid for coaching if you desired to do so on any MSR schemes or Sports Camps. Gianni Epifani who administers and promotes the association would be happy to visit any club committee meeting to discuss the association and how it can benefit your coaches, club and your athletes.

of Island Games competitors using the event as part of their preparation and who dominated the race.

The ladies race was won by Gail Griffiths of Manx Harriers setting a new Manx record over 10 miles for her age group with a time of 1:04:21. Second was Nikki Boyde (NAC), just 36 seconds adrift in 1:04:57; another Manx record for her age group. Third lady was Rebecca Wallace who came home in 1:07:23. A number of Northern athletes formed a team for this year's 'Race The Sun' competition organised by The Children's Centre, held to raise money to support vulnerable children and young people on the island. The aim is to run around the Isle of Man coastline in a relay of ten people between sunrise and sunset.
This year saw a record 22 teams enter the event, handicapped for the first time. The team surpassed its own expectations and were first home and recorded the fastest time of the day finishing in 12hr 43min 11sec. Taken at the end of the race the picture above shows the runners, from left to right, Alan Corlett, Tom Melvin, Rosy Craine, Kevin Vondy, Nikki Boyde, Rachael Tewkesbury, Glen Hamilton, Kevin Deakes, Ian Melvin and Richard Radcliffe.
Team manager Nikki receives the winners award from race organiser Mark Eastham.

Well done to our Northern AC athletes Abbie Melvin, Amber Sibbald, Jessica Hill, Sarah Melvin, James Strickett and Angus Macleod who all competed brilliantly in the 1st Open Meeting of the season at the NSC. The 100m & 800m were run on the track plus long jump & shot put.
Exceptional performances on the night came from Jessica Hill, winning all 3 of her events in the U11 girls age group, Amber Sibbald winning U13 girls long jump with a p.b of 3.76m and Angus Mcleod who showed great form in a closely run race to win the U11 boys 100m. It was a great experience for all & we hope even more of you can compete in the next event on the 13th June.

Well done to new club member Rosy Craine who took part in the recent Easter Festival. She finsihed as top Veteran Lady
in the competition, having taken part in 3 races over the holiday period. A 12th place finish in the 10K
over the Great South Run course on Friday was followed by 11th in the Peel Hill race the next day. She
completed the event on Sunday morning with another 12th place over a 5K course on Douglas Promenade.
Six club members took part in this year's London Marathon, in what turned out to be very warm conditions.
First Northern AC athlete home was Nikki Boyde with a new PB of 3:11:25.
Next to finish was Tom Melvin who made a last minute decision to take part following surgery earlier in
the week. Tom's time was 3:13:36.
Close behind was Richard Radcliffe finishing only 22 seconds later in 3:13:48; a time which means he has
qualified for next year's race. If he takes part in that it will be his 19th London marathon.
Rachael Tewkesbury was the 4th club member home, completing her third marathon in 3:27:08, a few minutes
outside her best set in Florida in 2009. Ian Melvin
finished his first ever marathon in 4:15:56, slightly outside his target time but an excellent debut
nevertheless. Pauline Smith was also attempting the marathon for the first time and will be pleased with
her time of 5:35:21.
Congratulations to them all.
